Microneedling for Men: The Treatment That Actually Fixes Acne Scars
Acne scars, enlarged pores, and rough skin texture are among the hardest skin concerns to treat. Here's why microneedling is the most effective solution available — and what to expect from treatment at Refine Clinic.
Acne scars are one of the most frustrating skin concerns a man can deal with. They're visible, they're persistent, and most over-the-counter products make almost no difference. Microneedling is different — it's one of the few treatments that actually works at the level where scarring occurs, and the results are measurable and lasting.
Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy (CIT) — uses a device fitted with fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-channels trigger the skin's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin.
The result is a progressive remodelling of the skin from the inside out — not just surface-level improvement, but genuine structural change in the dermis.
What Can Microneedling Treat?
For men, microneedling is most commonly used for:
Acne Scarring
This is where microneedling excels. Acne scars — whether rolling, boxcar, or ice-pick — are caused by damage to the collagen matrix beneath the skin. Microneedling stimulates the production of new collagen in exactly the areas where it was lost, progressively filling and smoothing the scar tissue.
Results are not instant — the collagen remodelling process takes weeks — but they are genuine and lasting. Most clients see 50–70% improvement in scar appearance after a full course of treatment.
Enlarged Pores
Large pores are primarily a structural issue — the pore walls have lost their collagen support and have widened. Microneedling rebuilds this support, tightening the pore walls and visibly reducing pore size over time.
Rough Skin Texture
Whether from acne, shaving irritation, keratosis pilaris, or general neglect, rough skin texture responds well to microneedling. The combination of exfoliation (from the micro-channels) and collagen stimulation produces a smoother, more refined surface.
Fine Lines and Early Ageing
The collagen stimulation triggered by microneedling also addresses fine lines and early signs of skin laxity. It's not a replacement for more intensive anti-ageing treatments, but as a preventative measure or for mild to moderate lines, it's highly effective.
Stretch Marks
Microneedling can improve the appearance of stretch marks on the body — particularly on the abdomen, chest, and upper arms — by stimulating collagen in the affected tissue.
Hyperpigmentation
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the dark marks left after spots) responds well to microneedling, particularly when combined with a brightening serum applied during treatment.
What Happens During a Microneedling Session?
- Consultation and skin assessment — your practitioner reviews your skin concerns and confirms suitability
- Cleansing — the skin is thoroughly cleansed and degreased
- Topical anaesthetic — a numbing cream is applied and left for 30–45 minutes
- Treatment — the microneedling device is passed systematically across the treatment area. The depth of the needles is adjusted for different zones — deeper over scarring, shallower over sensitive areas
- Serum application — a hyaluronic acid or growth factor serum is applied immediately after treatment, absorbed directly through the open micro-channels for maximum effect
- Aftercare — a soothing mask and SPF are applied
The treatment takes 60–90 minutes including the numbing period.
Does It Hurt?
With topical anaesthetic, most clients describe the sensation as a mild scratching or vibration. Without anaesthetic, it would be uncomfortable — which is why we always apply numbing cream. Sensitive areas (around the nose, forehead, and jaw) may feel more intense.
What Does the Skin Look Like Afterwards?
Immediately after treatment, the skin looks red — similar to moderate sunburn. This typically fades within 24 to 48 hours. Some clients experience mild swelling, particularly around the eyes. Tiny pinpoint marks may be visible for a day or two.
The skin will feel tight and dry during the healing period. Avoid makeup for 24 hours, and use only gentle, fragrance-free products for the first week.
How Many Sessions Do I Need?
- Mild acne scarring or texture concerns: three sessions, four weeks apart
- Moderate acne scarring: four to six sessions, four weeks apart
- Severe or deep scarring: six sessions, with possible combination with other treatments (chemical peels, PRP)
- Maintenance: one to two sessions per year after the initial course
Results continue to improve for three to six months after the final session as collagen remodelling completes.
Can Microneedling Be Combined with Other Treatments?
Yes — and often the best results come from combination approaches:
- Microneedling + chemical peel: the peel addresses surface pigmentation while microneedling works on deeper structural concerns
- Microneedling + PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): PRP applied during microneedling significantly accelerates healing and collagen production
- Microneedling + vitamin C serum: applied during treatment for enhanced brightening
Is It Safe for All Skin Types?
Microneedling is safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones — unlike some laser treatments, it does not carry a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin. It is not suitable if you have active acne breakouts, certain skin conditions, or are taking blood-thinning medication. A consultation will confirm suitability.
