Acupuncture, Cupping and Shockwave: When to Add Them to Your Massage
Three powerful add-on therapies that can significantly enhance your massage results — and the specific conditions each one is best suited to.
A standard massage session addresses a lot. But for men dealing with persistent pain, stubborn tension, or specific soft-tissue conditions, combining massage with one of our targeted therapies can make a significant difference to the outcome.
Here is a practical guide to our three most popular add-ons — what each one does, and when it makes sense to include it.
Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling)
Medical acupuncture — also called dry needling — uses fine, sterile needles inserted into specific trigger points in the muscle. It is based on Western anatomical and physiological principles, not traditional Chinese medicine, and it is used specifically for musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
How it works. The needle creates a micro-injury at the trigger point, stimulating a local twitch response that releases the contracted muscle fibres. This reduces pain, improves range of motion, and allows the surrounding tissue to relax more effectively.
When to add it. Medical acupuncture is most valuable when you have specific, localised pain that massage alone is not fully resolving — a persistent knot in the shoulder, chronic neck pain, lower back tension, or referred pain patterns. It is also effective for headaches originating from neck and shoulder tension.
What to expect. You may feel a brief, dull ache or twitch sensation when the needle reaches the trigger point. This is normal and indicates the treatment is working. The sensation is brief and most men find it entirely manageable.
We offer acupuncture for specific pain areas, the whole back, and the full body — standalone or combined with deep tissue or sports massage.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping uses suction cups placed on the skin to create a negative pressure that lifts the tissue. This draws blood to the surface, releases deep fascial adhesions, and improves local circulation.
How it works. The suction decompresses the layers of tissue beneath the skin — the opposite of the compression used in massage. This creates space in the tissue, breaks up adhesions, and stimulates the lymphatic system to clear metabolic waste.
When to add it. Cupping is particularly effective for men with dense, tight back muscles that are resistant to standard massage pressure. It is also useful for improving circulation in areas of chronic tension, and for men who find deep pressure uncomfortable but still need significant release.
What to expect. Cupping leaves circular marks on the skin — these are not bruises but areas of increased blood flow. They fade within 3–7 days. The sensation during treatment is a pulling or tightness — most men find it deeply satisfying.
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy delivers focused acoustic waves to a specific area of the body. It is a clinical treatment used for persistent soft-tissue and tendon conditions that have not responded adequately to massage or rest.
How it works. The acoustic waves stimulate cellular repair, increase blood flow, and break down calcified deposits in tendons and fascia. They also stimulate collagen production in the treated tissue, supporting long-term healing.
When to add it. Shockwave is most valuable for chronic conditions — plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, shoulder tendinopathy, and persistent hip or knee pain. If you have been dealing with a soft-tissue issue for more than 3 months and it is not resolving with massage alone, shockwave is worth considering.
What to expect. The treatment delivers a series of rapid pulses to the target area. You will feel a strong pressure sensation — it can be intense, but it is brief and the intensity is adjusted to your tolerance. Most men notice improvement within 3–5 sessions.
Combining Therapies
Our combination sessions are designed to pair these add-ons with deep tissue or sports massage for maximum effect. Some popular combinations:
- Deep tissue + acupuncture + heat — for chronic back pain with referred symptoms
- Sports massage + shockwave — for persistent tendon issues in active men
- Deep tissue + cupping — for dense, resistant back tension
- Deep tissue + acupuncture + heat + shockwave — our most comprehensive pain session
All combination prices are listed on the Deep Tissue Massage and Sports Massage pages.
Important Contraindications
