How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Do Men Need?

One of the first questions men ask when they come to Refine Clinic is: "How many sessions will I actually need?" It's a fair question — and the honest answer is that it depends. But there are clear patterns we see every day, and understanding them will help you plan your treatment realistically.

Why Hair Grows in Cycles

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle with light energy. The heat destroys the follicle — but only when the hair is in its active growth phase, known as the anagen phase. At any given moment, only a proportion of your hair is in this phase. The rest is either resting or shedding.

This is why a single session never removes all the hair in an area. Each session targets the hairs that are currently active. Over a course of sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, you progressively treat more and more of the follicles in that area.

The Typical Range for Men

Most men need between 6 and 8 sessions to achieve a 70–80% reduction in hair density. After completing a course, one to two annual top-up sessions are usually enough to maintain a near-permanent result.

That said, the number varies by area:

Face and neck — typically 8–10 sessions. Facial hair is often coarser and more hormonally influenced, which means it can be more resistant and may require additional sessions.

Chest and abdomen — usually 6–8 sessions. These areas respond well to treatment and most men see significant reduction within a standard course.

Back and shoulders — 6–8 sessions for most men. The back is one of the most popular areas we treat and tends to respond consistently.

Arms and legs — 6–8 sessions. These areas are generally straightforward.

Intimate areas (Brazilian, Hollywood, pubic area) — 6–8 sessions. Intimate area laser is a clinical treatment performed with complete discretion. Results are consistent and the area responds well to treatment.

What Affects the Number of Sessions?

Several factors influence how many sessions you'll need:

Hair colour and thickness. Darker, coarser hair absorbs laser energy more efficiently. Men with very dark, thick hair often see faster results. Lighter or finer hair may require more sessions.

Skin tone. Our triple-wave diode laser combines three wavelengths — Alex 755nm, Diode 808nm, and YAG 1064nm — to treat all skin tones safely. The appropriate wavelength is selected at your consultation.

Hormonal factors. Testosterone influences hair growth, which is why facial hair and certain body areas can be more resistant. Men with higher androgen levels may need more sessions or more frequent top-ups.

The area being treated. Areas with denser hair or more follicles per square centimetre typically require more sessions.

Consistency between sessions. Spacing sessions correctly — every 4–6 weeks — is important. Leaving too long between sessions allows more follicles to cycle out of the active phase before they're treated.

What to Expect After Each Session

After your first session, you'll typically notice a reduction in hair density within 2–3 weeks as treated hairs shed. The skin may appear slightly red for a few hours after treatment — this is normal and settles quickly.

By sessions 3–4, most men notice a significant reduction. By the end of a full course of 6–8 sessions, the majority of hair in the treated area will be gone or dramatically reduced.

The Patch Test: Why It's Non-Negotiable

Before your first session at Refine Clinic, a patch test is mandatory. This is a brief appointment where we test the laser on a small area of skin, assess your hair and skin type, and confirm you're a suitable candidate. The patch test must be completed at least 24 hours before your first full session.

We charge £15 for the initial consultation and patch test — this is credited towards your first treatment.

Planning Your Course

If you're considering laser hair removal, the most practical approach is to book a consultation first. We'll assess the area, discuss your goals, and give you a realistic picture of how many sessions you're likely to need and what results to expect.

Most men start with a commitment to 6 sessions and reassess from there. Some areas clear faster; others take a little longer. What's consistent is that the results are cumulative — each session builds on the last.

If you're ready to get started, book your consultation and patch test online. We're based at 66 Nile Street, London N1 7SR, and we treat men exclusively.
